Recently, the annual IP5 Statistics Report of the world’s five largest IP offices (IP5) was issued.
- The IP5 comprise the European Patent Office (EPO), Japan Patent Office (JPO), Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
- According to the Report, in 2023 3.0 million patent applications were filed at the IP5 offices and over 1.7 million patents were granted by them in the same timeframe. The EPO received 199 275 European patent applications in 2023, an increase of 2.9% over 2022, which was already 2.5% over 2021.
- The EPO will publish its 2024 statistics (Patent Index 2024) in March 2025;
